Francisco Gózon filmmaker's masterclass

The role of the cinematographer in creating the visual world of a film
18 October 2023, Wednesday, 2:00 p.m.
Accompanying film: Captives, Hungarian drama, 100 minutes, 2019. Director: Kristóf Deák
18 October 2023, Wednesday, 10:00 a.m.

Franciso GózonThe role of the cinematographer when it comes to creating the visual aspect of a film is crucial, since the power to determine the lights from which the image is born, lies in his hands. However, only a few take into account that if the tangible world unfolding in front of the lens is not fitting, the cinematographer might even be Storaro, and the lights might be splendid, they wouldn’t succeed in producing the right visuals in their images.

In Hungary, the situation varies greatly from production to production. There are creative processes where the cinematographer, left on his own, struggles with the departments and the elements to give birth to the visuals with sweat, and there are cases where they can work with a talented and multidisciplinary team, almost indulged, and when it comes to the images, they can freely decide from the many choices. The film, Captives falls into the latter category.
