Set Decorator Zsuzsanna Sipos Wins Oscar for Dune

In 2021, the super production Dune adapted from the cultic sci-fi novel was nominated for an Oscar in ten different categories, one of them acknowledging production design. The Hungarian set decorator Zsuzsanna Sipos, working along with the production designer Patrice Vermette were not only nominated for Best Production Design, but Monday night they received their Oscar Statuette.
In recognition of the award for best production design, the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) also awarded the film Dune, short in Hungary in 2021.
The rightfully famous sci-fi received the most awards at BAFTA’s Awards Ceremony in London. Although, the award for Best Picture and for Best Director was given to the film The Power of the Dog, the professional work of Zsuzsanna Sipos and Patrice Vermette did not remain unrecognized.
Dune – an adaptation of Frank Herbert’s novel published in 1965, had a chance to win eleven prizes based on a preliminary longlist and five were awarded at the BAFTA event. The film was awarded Best Sound (Mac Ruth, Mark Mangini, Doug Hemphill, Theo Green, Ron Bartlett), Best Special Visual Effects (Brian Connor, Paul Lambert, Tristan Myles, Gerd Nefzer), Best Original Score (Hans Zimmer) and Best Cinematography (Greig Fraser) at BAFTA.
Regarding her Oscar nomination, Zsuzsanna Sipos explained in an interview with HVG that despite the film’s positive reception and huge success, she would have never thought she would make it all the way to the Oscar.
