In order for us to feel at home in our city, and beside the recreational and leisure opportunities, it is a priority for Szolnok for its people to live in safety and harmony. When thinking about our children, our elderly and each other, we have worked under the aegis of mutual acceptance and by paying attention to one another. We provide special care for the elderly, continuously supporting their groups, leisure activities, and we put emphasis on regular contact with them and the utilization of their values and knowledge for future generations.
We started developments not only to make the city’s image nicer, but we also built safe and modern playgrounds in several points of the city, we provided health screening services, increased the number of civilian patrols, public area supervisors and, together with the police, we have reformed the crime prevention activities and placed surveillance cameras at different points of the city. And once again, the focus is on our kids!
Beside proper entertainment possibilities and healthcare, Szolnok is focusing more and more on the development of education and educational facilities.
There are permanent constructions, programmes and developments being implemented to create modern conditions for education. The university campus created for adult learners is a unitary whole that we can build on. And we do, since Szolnok is being built! Those coming to settle in the city meet an appropriate social care system, jobcreation programmes and efficiently cleaned streets and spaces for our well-being. Our developments strengthen the sense of identity and help social integrity. Living in Szolnok is good!
Szolnok’s current cityscape is a traditional, European cityscape. On the way towards the downtown, we are touched by the memories of the past, count Zounok proudly looks down from his statue on the city bearing his name, the Neo-Baroque Tisza Hotel decorated with Hungarian and Turkish architectural elements, and the Szigligeti Theatre near the hotel. Time has left expressive and beautiful buildings behind, like the eclectic City Hall or the County Hall.
At the main square the spectacular futuristic fountain with its modern beauty fascinates people at almost any time of the year with its unique bronze statues seeming almost alive, and there is a special stage that is part of the square and hosts many open-air cultural events.
There is a great emphasis on presenting and recommending entertainment and recreational possibilities within and separate from different events. We are very proud of the afore-mentioned Artists’ Colony, where internationally known artists like Vilmos Aba-Novák, Ferenc Chiovini, Tibor Pólya or Adolf Fényes have worked in the past. One should not miss the Colony’s magic garden on the shore of the River Zagyva, as well as the artists’ overwhelming, sometimes shocking, delighting or liberating works and exhibitions.
Visit the Damjanich János Museum and the Szolnok Gallery on the shore of the River Tisza, too. But, do not stop here! Another shining star of Szolnok, the Szigligeti Theatre, has been mentioned so far only in terms of its exterior. The treasures of Szolnok’s cultural life are not only the artists of the Colony and the theatre.
There are excellent musicians and choirs in Szolnok’s musical life like the Szolnok Symphony Orchestra, the Liszt Ferenc Chamber Orchestra, the Bartók Béla Chamber Choir, the Kodály Choir and many orchestras and bands. Parallel to music, the Tisza Dance Ensemble has performed in Europe and in the Far East, in Hungary and at international festivals.
