Production Designer is one of the key artists in the process of prepping, designing and shooting the movie. His work starts in a very beginning faze of film making. PD is the one who create visual film concept, discuss with director overall look of the movie, historical aspect of the story, color and mood of the picture and style of sets which he has to design. PD skill combine his artistic imagination, craft knowledge which allows him design the sets and manager ability to make proper budget of the sets. He also is a leader of big Art Department team and supervise work of many artist, craftsmen and technicians. His work allow audience feel the right period of the story, helps actors to express their characters and convey artistic message of Director.
The good Art Direction is part of movie picture, providing the background for actors and helps spectators believe in told story! Very often work of PD is not recognizable for movie goers. Therefore, every serious Award for Art Direction underline importance and artistic impact of Production Designer on overall look and message of the movie.
My biggest challenge as PD was designing and built sets for Twist Olivier by Roma Polanski. In the backlot of Barandov Studio we erected streets of XIX century London, elegant and poor, small villages, and in Studio Stages variate of historical interiors. The amount of work was enormous and world we created was convincing for audience in every country film was shown.
